The Kaaba Fruit

What? There is a fruit on this planet which I have never heard of, nor tasted? Yes, there is! It’s called „Kaaba“, and grows in The Gambia. The Kaaba season typically goes from May to October, but it’s also available out of season.
And what does it taste like?? It’s hard to describe. Depending on its ripeness, it’s somehow sweet and creamy, but with a tinge of sourness. It’s easy to open it with your hands, and it breaks into yellow fibrous parcels, each containing one seed. I was told not to eat the seed, but I’ve heard some people swallow it anyhow. 🙂
People prepare juice from it, or they boil the content of the fruit and add spices such as salt, pepper, chilli and sugar.

Here for example is a famous Kaaba stall in Senegambia. They sell cooked and seasoned Kaaba fruit in cups.

However, there is a GOOD amount of chilli in it – beware!
Although I am a spice lover, and pretty much used to spicy food, I had to eat this VERY SLOWLY! 😀

The most sustainable way would be to cut open the Kaaba on the top, empty it, prepare the content and fill the mixture back into the hollow shell (#plasticwaste). I was told that when the Kaaba is fully ripe, it’s cut on the top and eaten with a spoon. Let’s try to cut down on plastic as much as possible for the benefit of this planet.
