Why The Gambia?

People sometimes ask me, „Why exactly Gambia“? Well, life is pretty mysterious and has its own wings and ways. Somehow or other, my attention has been brought to this tiny country in 2020. It’s in fact the tiniest African country with only around 2 million inhabitants.

During the 90’s when I was still a teenager, many Africans started appearing in the Swiss city where I was born, and I didn’t really know why this was the case. Nor was I particularly interested in finding out.
Rather, I was intrigued by the Indian culture, which eventually brought me to India where I used to live for more than 10 years. It was a total immersion in an ancient spiritual way of life, which will remain in my heart forever. India has truly transformed me, internally as well as externally. And interestingly enough, soon upon my arrival in The Gambia, I started noticing the Indian supermarkets and Indians all around me. So the theme keeps following me wherever I go. And interestingly enough, Gambia and India share quite a piece of history/trauma since both countries got colonized by the British.

One thing which particularly stroke me during my first visit to The Gambia was how little knowledge I had about Africa in general. Okay, during history classes, we learned about colonization, the slave trade, etc. But apart from that, my brain was filled with stereotypical ideas and European perspectives rather than actual and useful facts about Africa.

TRAVEL is the best form of education.
I cannot stress this enough.
